Barcelona World Race - Under jury rig and engine, Juan Merediz (ESP) and Fran Palacio (ESP) finally arrived in Barcelona today on Central Lecheria Asturiana to start the clock on their race to be ready for the start of the Barcelona World Race.
After being dismasted last week off the Portuguese coast, near Cascais, the IMOCA Open 60 has hobbled towards the start city at slow speed. After stopping first in Cascais, the boat was forced to stop also in Puerto Sherry and Valencia.
'Well the delivery took us a little longer than we planned, but here we are and we have a big job on our hands, and at the moment my main goal is just to see a mast up on the boat with a sail.' Merdiz managed to joke today.
In Valencia they put together the detail plan along with the Southern Spars IMOCA Open 60 ace Dave Barnaby, and Juan Meseguer of North Sails.
The solution they have in place it to use the original classic rig from Kingfisher, (now We are Water) a non rotating rig with three sets of spreaders, which was already in Barcelona. The past week the mast tube has been prepped, ready to accept the supporting rigging, but it requires a new base to be constructed, and fully ultrasound tested.
The good news is that the rig is also lighter than their previous one (by about 40kgs), which means that there should not be any problems with final measurement.
