Barcelona World Race update.
The responsibility of carrying the message about a lack of drinking water and values such as solidarity and respect for nature and the environment across the globe, is something that fires up Jaume Murumbú and Cali Sanmartí.
In the midday sunshine at the Real Club Marítimo Barcelona the boat that will take this message around the world was unveiled, with lots of happy and excited faces of members of the team, the We Are Water Foundation and local institutions present. The skippers themselves are ready to take on the Barcelona World Race, a regatta they predict will be very tough, but which they face full of strength and feeling.
Santi Millán, the face of the We Are Water Foundation opened the presentation by joking about the lack of creature comforts onboard for the skippers, whilst coming up with an alternative suggestion of how to design the cabin interior for the next edition. Xavier Torras, the Roca company's Director of Communication, the company behind the We Are Water Foundation, then took over, highlighting the essential role of water as a life-source, as well as describing the intrinsic link between the values behind the Barcelona World Race and the Foundation, striving for change and caring for nature.
The pair responsible for carrying the message across the world's oceans, Jaume Mumbrú and Cali Sanmartí, have both agreed that the experience of approaching this regatta has been 'like a dream, which with every step becomes reality'. They say that their message, based on creating an awareness of the problems caused by a lack of suitable drinking water in some of the poorest regions in the world, as well as the importance of values intrinsic to offshore sailing will motivate them to take on this challenge successfully. They both agree that the added responsibility adds meaning and feeling to their project. Jaume Mumbrú also emphasised the steep level of competition and the level of prestige that the Barcelona World Race and the FNOB have achieved over just two editions of the race, as well as their admiration for their fellow skippers taking part in the round the world challenge.
To round up, Sports Councillor for Barcelona City Council and President of the FNOB Pere Alcober spoke of the many different agreements the regatta has set up between industry and universities to develop projects involving the latest technology and a commitment to the environment. Pere Alcober described the boat unveiled today as a serious entry with the ability to take on this adventure, and he also invited the general public to visit the Moll Barcelona World Race from the 18th December onwards to meet the teams and to see the yachts, as well as to enjoy the many educational and leisure activities programmed prior to the race start and continuing until the sixth of January.
