Ri Yaz Heritage Marina Resort and Spa, home of the Monsoon Cup, claimed its first ever win in the Heritage Bay Cup (HBC) when Wan Nordin Wan Abdullah guided his team, Ri-Yaz Heritage Sailing Team, to victory yesterday.
The 55-year-old Nordin said winning the HBC was a dream come true.
“I owe my Match Racing roots to the Monsoon Cup as I was part of the T-Best team in 2005 when I was recruited by the Monsoon Cup Yacht Manager David Mills to work in the maintenance department,” said Nordin.
“I helped to look after the boats and even took part in the HBC but never won. This is the best feeling of my life right now. It may not be a big event in many people’s eyes, but it very important to me,” added Nordin, who joined Ri-Yaz in 2008.
For the uninitiated, the Heritage Bay Cup is an amateur event which offers locals the opportunity to sail boats used in the world famous Monsoon Cup, considered one of the most difficult yacht races in the world. It is a heavily subsidised event, where entrants only pay RM350 per team of five.
The defending champions, however, will be invited back to defend the title without having to pay an entry fee.
Mills explained that teams also undergo class rooms sessions before they are allowed to race in the F36 boats, the same ones used in the Monsoon Cup.
The Monsoon Cup organisers came up with the idea of hosting the HBC to build the interest in Match Race sailing and the response has been very encouraging.
Six teams took part in the qualifiers – Asri Nazri, Pusat Sains Terengganu, Ri-Yaz Heritage Sailing Team, Belia 4B Duyong Kuala Nerus, Pusat Aktivity Kanak Kanak and AG eing – for the right to face defending champions TESDEC (Terengganu Skills and Development Centre) in the final.
Instead of the traditional one-on-one Match Race, the organisers opted to send the top three qualifiers into the final as they wanted to give the local crew more sailing time.
