A record $3.2 million generated from Victorian recreational fishing licence fees will be re-invested in 21 projects to improve recreational fishing across the state.
The Victorian Government is taking action to improve recreational fishing opportunities and these projects are great examples of how funds derived from the sale of fishing licences are being used to make a real difference.
More than $750,000 will be earmarked for recreational fisheries-related research projects including research to monitor the southern bluefin tuna recreational fishery, investigating sand flathead stocks in Port Phillip Bay and looking into the feasibility of Eastern king prawn stocking at Lake Tyers. It also includes a $105,000 grant to create safe all-weather angler access to Taylors Lake near Horsham while $60,000 will also go to build a boardwalk, fishing platform and car park at Hordern Vale, on the Aire River in Victoria’s southwest.
$75,000 will help restore native fish habitat in the Broken River and $84,500 will help build a fishing platform, install solar lights and provide access paths for anglers at Sydenham Inlet, on the Bemm River in Gippsland.
Other grants included:
$100,000 to boost fishing platform access at Flinders;
$99,000 to improve fish habitat on the Ovens River upstream of Bright;
$62,000 to construct five fishing jetties at Cobden Lake;
$23,400 to build a fishing platform at the popular Tannery Road Bridge on the Tarra River at Tarraville, in west Gippsland;
$60,000 to improve fish habitat in the Nariel Creek, near Corryong; and
$30,000 to construct a fishway to aid the passage of fish at the Lower Breakwater on the Barwon River.
Since its inception in 2001, the annual recreational Fishing Grants Program has funded more than 320 projects worth nearly $11 million. Another $200,000 is being provided for fish stocking across the state and more than $1 million will be spent on Fisheries compliance while two of the grants will be used for education projects.
