Annual PCCSC Match Race Championship for the Dick Sweet Trophy, October 23-24, 2010 was hosted by UC Irvine and Balboa Yacht Club.

Saturday: Seven teams arrived at Balboa Yacht Club for the first Annual PCCSC Match Race Championship. The Newport/Balboa Sailing and Seamanship Association made available their pristine fleet of Governor 21, boats purpose built for match racing, for this event.

After a competitors briefing and boat draw teams were towed out to the ocean for a short practice time and the start of the round robin. By the end of Saturday 1 round robin was completed with UH, USC, UCSD and CMA rounding out the top four, UH was undefeated, USC and UCSD tied with a 4-2 record and CMA with a 3-3 record. Winds averaged 4 kts during the day with some puffs in the afternoon.

Sunday: All seven teams came back for the 9 am report time where they were seeded into a gold fleet (top 4) and silver fleet (bottom 3) for two stages of knockouts and round robins to determine final rankings. The silver fleet started with a round robin and the gold fleet paired off 1v4 and 2v3 for a first to 2 point knock out series. At the end of Stage 2 CMA and USC were seeded into the championship finals, a knockout to 2 points, UCSD and UH were in the petite finals, another knockout to 2 points and the silver fleet completed another round robin. Winds averaged 6kts with some gusts to 11.5 kts in the later afternoon. All courses were a windward leeward twice around and the length of the windward leg ranged from 0.15nm to 0.26nm during the day to keep races running at about 18 minutes.

Many thanks to the army of volunteers who made this event possible, the Newport Balboa Sailing and Seamanship Association, the UC Irvine Sailing Team and the members, Board and staff at the Balboa Yacht Club. Without all these volunteers this event would not have happened.
