While the show must go on, we know that this year’s Club Marine Mandurah Boat Show will be missing something important. Our good friend Malcolm Douglas passed away on 23rd September in an accident at his Crocodile Park in Broome. He leaves behind a legacy that will not be easily forgotten.
In 1964, 23 year old Malcolm Douglas set off with a mate on a six-month trip around Australia. Six months turned into four years, and this first journey was just the beginning of what is now Malcolm’s life. And as they travelled and explored, they filmed their adventures, later turning them into documentaries which have been shown to audiences world-wide.
Since his initial film, Malcolm has produced more than 50 documentaries and films for Australian television. Malcolm was the original 'crocodile hunter' who opened the Broome Crocodile Park in 1983; which has become popular for tourists all over the world. Malcolm was a passionate conservationist, starting up the Kimberley Bilby rescue organistion and working towards increasing numbers of this almost-extinct Aussie animal.
And Malcolm was a faithful friend to organisers of the Club Marine Mandurah Boat Show. Malcolm has attended the Boat Show every year; giving demonstrations, showing off his camp oven cooking skills, organising the casting competition, and generally entertaining people just by being himself. Malcolm was a big man – big in size, big in personality, had big ideas, and was full of life. He’ll be sadly missed.
Gone but not forgotten. One of Malcolm’ legacies will still live on at the Club Marine Mandurah Boat Show. The Casting Competition will operate this year with all proceeds being donated to Malcolm’s 'Kimberley Bilby' project. Come down to the Show, have a go at the casting competition and try to win great prizes - and support a worthy and important cause.
Thanks for everything, Malcolm!
