Tasmania will again be represented in the Interdominion schools teams racing championship, with the Guildford Young College/St Virgil’s College team of eight young sailors flying to New Zealand today.
This will be the fourth time in five years that a team from the Colleges (Guildford Young is the grades 11 and 12 campus at which St Virgil’s student attend at the completion of grade 10) has been invited to sail in the Interdominion event.
The regatta, to be sailed in International 420 class dinghies, starts with an invitation race on Kawau Bay, north of Auckland, and is being hosted by the Sandspit Yacht Club in conjunction with the New Zealand Team Sailing Association.
Also representing Australia will be teams from St Joseph’s and St Michaels Schools in South Australia, with each school fielding a team of three boats against three top New Zealand schools.
The young sailors in Guildford Young/St Virgil’s team are members of a variety of Hobart clubs and comprise Rowan Clark, helm (captain, Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania), Justin Boutchard, helm (Derwent Sailing Squadron), Jonn Cooper, helm (Sandy Bay Sailing Club), Matthew Schofield, crew (Austins Ferry Yacht Club), Sam Tiedemann, crew (DSS and SBSC), James McIndoe, crew (SBSC), Josh Connor, crew (Bellerive Yacht Club) and Tommy Cooper, crew (SBSC).
Coach is Ollie Nichols, an old boy of St Virgil’s College and team manager is Sean Tiedemann.
'We are confident we will do well against the Kiwis,' the team manager said today. 'This year the boys won the southern schools team racing championship followed by the Tasmanian schools team racing title, earning them the right to represent the State at the Australian championship in Adelaide, along the Hutchins School and the Friends School.
'As a consequence of their fine performance in Adelaide, they were invited to represent Australia, along with the two South Australian schools, in the Interdominion schools teams racing in New Zealand over three days next week.'
