The first of the four-event Phuket Dinghy Series, hosted by the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, saw a total of 21 sailors take part. Fourteen juniors in the Optimist class and seven sailors in the Laser class took to the startline on Day One. Held at the 'Sailing of Phuket' club at Tha Nun near Sarasin Bridge, the weekend brought together sailors from Phuket, Phang Nga, Songkla and Sattahip.
Under the experienced eye of Race Officer Jiray Tipsuk and with support from the Royal Thai Navy, five races were held over the weekend. Junior sailors of a wide range of ages and experience took part in the Optimist class - one Phuket sailor started learning to sail just four weeks ago and was competing for the first time. The Optimist fleet was made up of sailors from the Royal Thai Navy sailing academy in Songkla as well as four local juniors from the Sailing of Phuket club, and one who had travelled from Sattahip to take part in the weekend event.
In the Laser class, Thai sailor Chat Dawruang showed the fleet a clean pair of heels winning five out of five. While second and third places were traded amongst others in the class, Trirat Manthong eventually took second overall with Mak Sarawat third.
Rarely are so many Optimist sailors seen out on-the-water competing in Phuket, and sailing at the northern tip of Phuket Island was indeed a sight to behold. Pretty and picturesque it may have been but no prisoners were taken out on-the-water as the juniors battled hard for supremacy.
Flukey winds on Day One were replaced with more consistent winds on Day Two, and combined with strong currents, made for some technical sailing prowess from juniors and adults alike.
Sattahip sailor, Anapat Ngarmdee (11 years old), who is expected to become a member of the Thai National Team next year, reigned supreme with five wins from five. However, the minor places were hotly contested with places being traded throughout the fleet and lots of action at the mark roundings. Finally, after five races over two days, Tanakon Patonma took second place from Suthisarn Keawnin in third.
After the four events, the overall series winners will be presented with trophies at the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Royal Awards Ceremony on 11th December at Kata Beach Resort & Spa.
The next event in the series will take place at the Sailing of Phuket club 30-31 October, 2010. The Notice of Race and full series one results are available on the official Phuket King's Cup Regatta website.
