2.4mR World Championships, Holland - 19th to 25th September. Day 5 update.

After some heavy thunderstorms over night the sailors were greeted by a bit of sunshine this morning. Again a choppy sea state with an oscillating breeze out of 230, four to five knots knots gusting a promising seven knots. First start, as per usual, a general recall so the black flag comes out for the next start.
Paul has a great start at the boat end of the line. Bruce is there as well but a bit late and has to tack out looking for clear air on the right side of the course. At the top mark SWE 441 is in the lead followed by Paul Tingley, Thierry Schmitter from the Netherlands, SWE 419 and Stellen Berlin.

The whole fleet gybes on to port and the wind has increased to seven knots. The breeze stays in the right face and SWE 441 builds up a comfortable lead. At the gate, a change of course is signaled SWE 441, followed by Paul and Thierry. They all take the right gate heading left. Bruce is in ninth. After a short starboard tack both Paul and Bruce lead the fleet to the right side of the course. When Bruce tacks back he has made a good gain. Paul hits a light patch and possibly some weed as boats he has covered below him sail away and the boats to windward keep going as well. Then the wind goes back to the left and Paul loses a lot of distance. At the second top mark SWE 411, Stellen Berlin, Thierry and then a bit further back Paul. Bruce missed the left shift and rounds in 12.

All gybe on the post gybe and after 300 meters Paul is the first to gybe back on to starboard. He has timed this well and picks up a bit more breeze and closes right in on the two in front of him. The winds drops back to 4 knots and 2/3rd’s down the run Paul gybes on to port and seemed to have passed Thierry, and is even with Stellen. The last bit of the run the leaders go neck on neck. With positions changing regularly and a whole lot of gybes. On the left side, Germany’s Heiko Kroger has caught right up with the trio in 2-4. Bruce plays the run to much in the middle and boats pass him on both sides. After one hour of racing SWE 441 rounds the gate in first. Thierry and Stellen round the left gate in front of Paul who takes the right gate. Bruce lands 14th. At the first cross Stellen is just a head of Paul and covers him from there on tack for tack to the finish. At the finish its SWE 441 , Thierry, Stellen and Paul. Bruce drops a couple of boats and finishes 18th, one boat behind Helena Lucas.

Race 10 starts in four knots of wind but with a big cloud on the right side of the course. Bruce has a decent start. Paul has a shocking start crossing the line last and struggles to find a clear lane going right. Then the wind starts going right and increasing to 8/9 knots, the boats on the right are reaching to the top mark. At this point, Ned 11 is in a comfortable lead, then a few boats get pulled out being black flagged. Among them Thierry Schmitter and Heiko Kroger. Bruce rounds in fifth and Paul has benefited from the right shift to come through in 11th. Stellen is deep down the fleet. Bruce takes the left side of the run while Paul plays the right. At the bottom gate a big lead, 50 seconds, for NED 11. GBR 88 in second followed by BEL 12. Bruce rounds in fourth, Paul in ninth going around the right gate going left. Still a big cloud on the right side of the course. The wind goes right and then after a couple of minutes shifts back left a little. Bruce stayed in the middle too much and loses boats on both sides. At the second top mark it is NED 11, GBR 88 and SWE 441. Bruce in ninth and Paul in 17th. Stellen in 21st after a good upwind. Bruce plays the right on the run, Paul the left. At the gate NED 11 still has just under a minute lead over GBR 88 and SWE 441. Bruce in 13th and Paul in 18th. Bruce goes left up the last upwind to the finish and Paul goes right. At the finish it is NED 11, GBR 88 and then SWE 441. Bruce comes back to eighth and Paul finishes 14th. Helena 10th and Stellen 25th.

Thus an interesting day tomorrow with a new leader after the second drop came in. Leading after a 1,3 today SWE 441 Hans Aspelund with 46 points, then Paul on 47, Stellen on 51, Bruce on 57. There is some more wind forecasted for tomorrow.

Fortune favours the Beneteaus!
Thank you, Huey… Some sun, and a tad of wind means it is time to go racing... Ahead of the annual Beneteau Pittwater Regatta by Flagstaff Marine the weather had not been all that grand. So, peaks of sun migrating to distinct patches, and the occasional zephyr turning into a waft, then on to a calm breeze was fortunate.
