2.4mR Worlds - Canadians take over the leaderboard www.sailing.ca
2.4mR Worlds update: This morning there was four knots breeze out of 185 out on the course area. The water was surprisingly choppy for the little amount of wind. First start attempt was right on time at 11am.

After the first general recall the race committee went straight for the black flag. Bruce had mentioned before the start that the fleet was very nervous and he was right, as the next start was a general recall again. One of the black flag victims was British sailor Helena Lucas the number three overall going in to today.

On the third start Paul starts three boats away from the pin end and has a nice clear lane. Bruce is more towards the middle of the line and is forced to tack out. The breeze is dropping down to three knots as Paul works the right side of the course and Bruce the middle. The leaders are all coming out of the left. Bruce rounds in a credible 11th place, Paul is in the fifties.

Overall leader, Stellen Berlin from Sweden is in about 15th. The sun start to come through the cloud cover and the wind drops down to two knots. Bruce stays right of the lead group on the run, while Paul gybes at the mark.

At the bottom gate there is a change of course signaled. Dutch man, Thierry Schmitter arrives there first closely followed by SWE 441 and SWE 440. Bruce rounds the right gate in ninth. Paul has made some gains and rounds in the forties.

The wind has gone back to the left and there is also a bit more pressure on the left side. Thierry extends his lead followed by German Heiko Kroger, the gold medalist from Sydney, ten year ago, and GBR 92.

The pressure is still in the left and the first six boats have a big gab to the rest of the fleet. Bruce had been right but takes his loss early to hang in with a 14th place. Bruce is just behind a little group and has the opportunity to pass back a couple of boats.

Paul was on the right side and loses all the gains made on the run, so does Stellen who rounds the second top mark behind Paul. Bruce has a good run going through the middle and passes a couple of boats rounding the bottom gate in 11th. He stays in 11th crossing the finish. Paul ends up with a 39th.

With Stellen getting a second bad race and Paul bringing his ninth place from yesterday in to play Paul is in the overall lead followed by Bruce.

Race eight gets on the way with a black flag in two to three knots of wind. The course to the first mark is 165 degrees. Paul and Bruce start towards the pin and have ok starts. Both play the left as the wind picks up to four knots.

At the first mark Stellen is leading followed by SWE 420 and SWE 423. Paul is in eighth and Bruce in 10th. Halfway down the run the whole fleet is on starboard gybe and both Bruce and Paul of over taken some boats. At the gate, Stellen, in first followed by SWE 423 and SWE 420. Paul is in fifth and Bruce in sixth.

Paul is the first of the leading pack to tack on to port. Bruce makes a little tack up to the right pressure and then continues going left. Paul was the first to pick up the right pressure and looks very promising. But when the wind shift back left Paul is struggling to come back. Bruce takes the left shift all the way to the mark to round in fourth.

Swe 423 has taken the lead from Stellen and SWE 420. Paul rounds in eighth. Paul is the first to gybe. The breeze has dropped to two knots. At the bottom SWE 423 leads from Stellen and SWE 440. Bruce is in fourth and takes the right gate. Paul is still in eighth but has lost a lot of distance on the left side of the run. Bruce drops a place on the way to the finish and Paul comes across the line in eighth. Helena Lucas finishes in ninth.

Overall our Canadians have done good business today. Paul is leading and Bruce is in second. Helena in third. Three more races to go and after race number 10 the second drop comes in.
