Half Ton Classic Cup 2011 - Cowes chosen as venue

by Half Ton Class Europe on 24 Sep 2010
General Tapioca, Philippe Pilate. Half Ton Classic Cup http://www.halftonclass-europe.net/ SW

The Half Ton Class Europe is proud to announce that, after some deliberation it has chosen Cowes as the venue for the fifth Half Ton Classic Cup. The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club is to host the regatta, which is open to all former IOR half tonners. The regatta dates are 21-26 August 2011.

The local representative of the Half Ton Class, Richard Hollis, owner of the X-95 Crackajax (which is a production half tonner), is also Rear Commodore RCYC. Richard has agreed to co-ordinate the event, with active support of the Half Ton Class Europe.

By announcing the date and venue of the next event at an early stage, the Half Ton Class Europe and the RCYC hope that you and the other participating teams are given enough time to prepare your entry.

We know that Cowes has a reputation of being rather an expensive venue for regattas. Therefore the Class and Mr Hollis are delighted to announce that berthing for all participants has been secured at Shepards’ Wharf Marina at specially negotiated rates. The task of finding your local crew house will be largely facilitated by local letting agent Andrea Vaughan of Regattalets.com.

We are also aware about the evolution taken by our little sisters the quarter tonners. That is why the Half Ton Class Europe would like to remind owners that the Class Spirit, well known to all the crews who have participated in one of the previous 4 Half Ton Classic Cups, will prevail in scrutinising applications to enter the event.

You all know that the Class’ rules prescribe that no alterations shall have been made to the hull of the boat (IOR bumps being faired etc). We’ll add to this that rigid wing masts will not be tolerated either, as well as any form of outside assistance such as coach boats during races. Furthermore it is our intention to allow no more than (1) professional crew on any one boat.

The event will consist of 5 days of racing. The race officer will be asked to set windward-leeward races, Olympic triangles, 'round the cans' races on the Solent as well as a ‘long’ offshore race: wind and weather permitting, we will take you and your halftonner ‘Round the Island’ for a memorable race.

We’re sure that you will all agree with us that this should make the Half Ton Classic Cup 2011 a truly memorable event.
