Audi Hamilton Island Race Week began for the 200 plus fleet today as they were gunned away on the 23.3 nautical mile Molle Island Race, which has been a bookend for this regatta for more than a decade.

Under grey skies in 10-12 knots of breeze, the divisions progressively crossed the start line in a running tide, and headed up the Dent Passage round the corner and towards South Molle Island.

With their spinnakers flying, the Cruising divisions were first away as the clock ticked down to the IRC Grand Prix division start.

The New Zealand sloop Georgia started on the Hamilton Island Yacht Club shoreline, along with Lahana, Secret Men’s Business 3.5, Terra Firma and Loki. Wild Oats X started on the pin end, Black Jack mid line.

Wild Oats X and Black Jack found good breeze as the group of boats starting on the Hamilton Island shoreline quickly gybed back towards Dent Island looking for the pressure.

Wild Oats X stayed well on the Dent shoreline until she and Black Jack headed across the Cumberland passage towards South Molle.

Back in the fleet, Loki had gained some ground as had Living Doll, who appeared to be slow to the line and started well back in the fleet.

Up ahead spinnakers filled the horizon as the fleet sailed towards South Molle.

Regatta Director Denis Thompson commented post-start 'Its just great to have breeze, after a very light weather week. With the strong tide pushing the fleet toward the line, everyone did remarkably well, we had just four OCS's and all but one returned.'
