Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania's Motors Winter Pennant Series report.
The Northshore 38 Moonshine today notched up her second Division 1 win of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania's Motors Winter Pennant series, sailed in a fresh to strong north-west to northerly breeze on the Derwent.
The fleet revelled in the strongest winds so far this winter season, with the breeze between 15-20 knots for most of the race, with some bullets of 25 to 28 knots.
Skippered by Bruce Palmer, Moonshine has notched up two wins and a fourth so far this winter to provisionally hold a two point lead overall from the Sydney 36 Pisces (Graham McKibben) and the Farr 40 Voodoo Chile (Lloyd Clark) which finished second and third today, just 26 seconds apart.
The International Dragon class yacht Leander with Steve Henley on the helm, sailed an excellent race to win Division 2, also her second victory of the Winter Pennants. Leander won the pursuit race comfortably from Gavin Hall’s Serenity and Robin Flemming’s Miss Conduct.
The Division 2 fleet saw the first appearance of Hobart’s latest one-design class, the International SB3 sports boat, with Nick Roger’s Tolling Shipping placing eighth overall, but recording second fastest time around the windward/leeward course.
In a close finish, Tolling Shipping crossed the line just nine seconds ahead of the second SB3, Jacinta and Brad Cooper’s Harcourt, with all three SB3's turning on some spectacular downwind speed under their massive yellow spinnakers.
Division 3 saw a close win for Riverdance (Wayne McNeice) from Impara II (P Holmes) and Elliott 1 (J Anderson).
