Shetland Round Britain and Ireland Race competitors are now safely home, the intrepid sailors from Devon and Cornwall all took part in the event, which was sponsored by Shetland Island Council.

Official results show that all the South West boats did well in their respective classes, with FujiFilm skippered by Alex Bennett from Torquay coming in third overall. The last boat to cross the finishing line earlier this week was Summerbird, crewed in the true Corinthian spirit of the race by father and son partnership David and Sebastian Southwood. Summerbird based on the River Yealm is a Warrior 40, designed for gentle downwind cruising and under a previous owner cruised around the world.

Suroma, sailed by Bill and Robin Graham from Newton Ferrers on the Yealm came second in Class four, closely followed by Flair II sailed by father and son William and Ned Mumford, also from the Yealm. Along with Dan Fellows who co-skippered Drama Queen, built by Cornish based Multimarine Composites and the second multi-hull to cross the line, and co-skipper of Fujifilm Malcolm Dickinson, this made the biggest single entry group from one club - The Yealm Yacht Club.

Other local boats to cross the line were Plymouth based Backlash 11 sailed by Tony Purser and Matt Theobald, Plymouth based Livewire sailed by Stuart Dodd and Home Run from South East Cornwall sailed by John Goodchild and Mike Povery.

Yogo Racing Izara sailed by the two youngest competitors in the race, 21-year-old Oliver Young from Saltash and Sam Goodchild from Falmouth came sixth in their class.

'This race was a truly epic adventure,' said Race Director Peter Taylor of the Royal Western Yacht Club. 'And it was great to see so many local competitors cross the finish line. Everyone did very well and entered into the spirit of the Shetland Round Britain and Ireland Race, and we look forward to welcoming the winners to the prize giving at the Royal Western Yacht Club on 23rd October.'
