West Kirby Sailing Club - Should have stayed on the water!

by Martin / West Kirby Sailing Club on 6 Jul 2010
West Kirby Sailing Club’s GP14 fleet West Kirby Sailing Club
West Kirby Sailing Club welcomed their competitors to what must have been the hottest day of the year so far, and will 11 boats (of which four were visitors). It wasn’t enough to run the round robin scheme, so the day was switched to a five-race series with four to count.

Chris Hoppins, the officer of the day, promised the fleet that it would all be completed before 3.30 so everyone could have a few cold beers and watch the England v Germany match. (Maybe we should have stayed on the water.) And good to his word the courses were organised quickly and the races started without delay.

The morning started off with a light wind coming across the lake, but it soon swung round 90 degrees and picked up a bit, coming down the lake to give a longer beat.

From the start the first beats were competitive with a mix of boats rounding the first windward marks, but the visitors showed their hand with faster downwind legs clearing the fleet and picking up the clean air. Martin Brennan and Alister Knott dominated most of the races sailing away by a few boat lengths, and had won the day by race four.

The real close racing was to be had in those further down the course, with places changing on each leg.

Prizes were awarded to the first three boats in the Gold and Silver Fleets. First overall and Gold Fleet winner was Martin Brennan/Alister Knott, HLSC, Bill Kenyon/Ben Bitchburn, Budworth SC, were second and Pete Jacques, Chase SC, third.

Home boats dominated the Silver Fleet results: Jean Louis-Simons/Mark Hinton, WKSC, were first, with Martin Kent/Sheena Davies, WKSC, second and Alan Jenkins/Robert Thompson, WKSC, third.

The WKSC fleet certainly enjoyed the day and hope to be able to offer a slot in the Northern Bell series again next year.
