YANMAR Racing’s Peter Gilmour is coming to the Stena Match Cup Sweden, an event he has won an amazing seven times, in excellent form.

Last week YANMAR Racing won the fourth event on the ISAF 2010 World Match Racing Tour, the Portugal Match Cup, and as Gilmour says 'that was a good entrée' into the Swedish event.

‘We consider Sweden to be a Grand Slam event on the World Match Racing Tour. The past 10 or so events there, that we have competed in, have obviously been very, very good for us. We love the event. I think it’s an incredible event with both Open and Women’s match racing - it really comes alive with the mix and it’s just one of those wonderfully unique venues in the world that has a natural amphitheatre setting.

‘It seems we always have sunshine and breeze and a great crowd sitting on the rocks. I think the beauty of Marstrand is a very technical and challenging race course, which is the kind we like best, and a crowd close at hand in a spectacular venue.

‘We had a good run last week in Portugal. Our winning starts on those last two days made a real difference.’

With a 2-1 result in the All Western Australian Final against Torvar Mirsky, YANMAR Racing became the new Portugal Match Cup Champions. Mirsky Racing Team, the 2009 defending champions, finished second with Adam Minoprio's ETNZ/BlackMatch Racing third and Ian Williams' Team GAC Pindar fourth.

Gilmour is full of praise for the young Australian Torvar Mirsky. 'Torvar's guys did an outstanding job in Portugal, MRT really were a top team. To win the Round Robin Series for a second time, then to come away from the event after finishing second saying 'Wow that was really great for us', I thought was true testimony to what a great attitude the team has.

‘While Mathieu Richard is still leading the Tour anything could happen from here, there is a big bunch behind him, so after Sweden the 2010 Tour leader board could be wide open.'

Gilmour and his YANMAR Racing crew will be at full strength with mainsheet-tactician Cameron Dunn, trimmer Thierry Douillard, pitman Yasuhiro Yaji and bowman Kazuhiko Sofuku lining up against another fifteen Open Division crews, to contest what is undoubtedly the biggest sailing event on the Swedish calendar.

Recognising the importance of sponsors in sailing Gilmour commented ‘This is a very high profile sailing event and for YANMAR and YANMAR Racing, it is a great opportunity for us to showcase YANMAR in a part of the world that is dominated by Scandinavian motors.'
