Area E and K Semi-finals for the US Match Racing Championship

Van Tol pushes Johnson away from the line - Area E and K semi-finals for the US Match Racing Championship Kathy Lindgren
The Area E/K Semifinals were hosted by Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, Michigan on June 26 and 27. Eight teams from as far away as St. Louis, Missouri and Toronto, Canada completed a round robin Saturday in ideal conditions.

Nate Hollerbach from Chicago sailed a perfect round robin to place first. Finishing right behind Nate, was Bayview local, Chris Van Tol. Van Tol's only loss this weekend was to Hollerbach. Rounding out the top four were another Bayview local, Kent Colpaert and Mark Johnson from Neenah, Wisconsin.

The BYC Race Committee, led by PRO Marcia Everingham, did a superb job getting in the Semi-finals, Petit Finals, and Final matches run, despite challenging weather conditions. The storm cells rolling down the Detroit River only allowed for a 60-90 minute windows of opportunity before the next storm arrived, to get in the races. In the end, the VanTol team beat Hollerbach 2 out 3 matches to win.

1st place Chris Van Tol, John Van Tol, and David Shriner
2nd place Nathan Hollerbach, Serge Lie, and Mike Reye

These two teams will represent Areas E and K at the US Match Racing Championship being hosted by Bayview Yacht Club in September.

3rd place Mark Johnson
