WOW Ladies Only Race Night at LSYC was a huge success!

by Heather Robertson on 18 Jun 2010
WOW at LSYC Heather Robertson
Jen Zimmerman of Ashe sailing out of LSYC provides the following report on the WOW Ladies Only Race Night held at LSYC June 14. We had great weather - wind and 30 ladies racing on seven boats. >/b>

Next event is June 21st at Mimico Cruising Club. Sign up early by emailing wow.womenonthewater@gmail.com. Or visit the WOW Facebook Page.

June 14, was the first of, and hopefully many, WOW races. All the boats had new sailors on board as well as new racers on board. We had women from all over the GTA as well as boats from Mimico Cruising Club and Etobicoke Yacht Club.

A total of seven boats in all crossed the start line with bodies equalling 29! The race started off with just a breath of wind that kept swirling around the fleet. So we all waited with baited breath – 'are we going to have another drifter', I thought to myself. The light breeze finally settled down to a warm offshore and twoboats were off with spinnakers blazing on tight beam reaches.

Just before the boats reached the first race mark the wind decided to slam the fleet with 15-18 knots of wind, with no warning. On Ashe the little 3,000 lb Bombardier, we still had the spinnaker up and quickly doused it as two of the four crew were new and the boat was set up for light winds (VERY light winds).

With rails in the water, all boats rounded mark 5 and the fleet took off to mark 4. But where was mark 4? It was there on the 13th of June but now…

This is the second time in three years mark 4 has gone missing from the race course at Lakeshore Yacht Club, maybe there is some kind of Bermuda Triangle in that vicinity? If anyone wants the GPS coordinates so they can avoid the area – let us know.

All boats crossed the finish line and we headed in for some good laughs and great food cooked by The Store - Mason's Chandlery and then a rainbow could be seen against the dark clouds reaching from the North Shore of Lake Ontario to the South Shore. What a night!

If you are interested in racing on a boat or bringing your boat to the next WOW race night, contact Lori at The Store or Jen of Ashe at jen@thelazycat.ca.

Our next race, after that is scheduled for Monday, July 12, 2010. I would love to see more boats out and more Women on the Water. For those of us who raced last night, keep checking the Lakeshore Yacht Club website for the results, as they will be posted as soon as possible – www.lsyc.com.
