27th Port Lincoln Yacht Club annual Frostbite

Just two of the dozens of PLYC junior sailors eagerly awaiting the next summer. - 27th Annual Frostbite Regatta 2010 Richard Davison
Port Lincoln Yacht Club Frostbite shaping up to be light this year. The annual series has been running for over a quarter of a century now, and began as an invitation by Port Lincoln Yacht Club Sharpie sailors to other Sharpies, turn up on the June long weekend and we'll run a short series.
With the 27th annual Frostbite regatta being held this Saturday and Sunday the formula works, and works well.
This year's Sharpie fleet is looking to be at least 17 confirmed, with a few more long boats expected to register Friday evening, or on the Saturday morning. In addition to this there will be a handful of die-hard Herons, and several Lazers expected to front the start of race one at 1:30 pm Saturday giving a combined fleet in the mid thirties. The various fleets are expected to contest three back to back races on Saturday, and a further three back to back on Sunday before packing up and enjoying a relaxing evening of top food and live entertainment until late.
Conditions this time of year on the unique and world class sailing waters of Boston Bay tends towards extremes - it's either flat calm or blowing the crabs out of the sand, with little in between while the winter weather patterns establish. Given the much colder water and wind temperatures now it is a true test of sailing enthusiasm!
Every entrant in their race pack receives a specially labelled commemorative bottle of quite reasonable Port - few of which survive the weekend for some reason.... The social atmosphere is fantastic, and informal. The Adelaide and other guest crews rave about the pots of gently steamed and inventively flavoured local mussels and other local seafood - frequently cooked and served by the local producers themselves.
The PLYC web site shows some of the sailing action and results to date from another very successful season.
