More Gold for Australian Sailors...lets have relays!!

by News Editor on 6 Oct 2000

Olympics just over & already the Politicians became Politicians again, long before Sydney siders even think about snarling at each other in traffic...

For minor sports..which get sadly small amounts of media cover, the fight is for government funding. Naturally every sport wants to explain why funds should come to them.

There will be lots of spin, put on the results...

The top three sports in the Australian medal counts...

Swimming team 44 team members 5 Gold, 9 Silver, 4 Bronze

Cycling 15 team members 1 Gold, 2 Silver, 3 Bronze

Sailing 18 team members 2 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze

The following sports, with team numbers in brackets did not win a medal between them...its an interesting list.

Badminton (7), Baseball (28), Boxing (10), Canoe/kayak (5) Cycling Mountain & Road (15) Fencing (7), Football (36) Gymnastic artistic & rhythmic (9) Handball (30) Volleyball-indoor (24) Syncronised swimming (9) Weightlifting (12), Wrestling (12)

Anyway you cut it, the Australian sailing team did themselves and us proud.

But it could be better...swimming has relays...lets lobby for sailing relays..

Can you imagine it, to increase the number of events, we have single-handed and multi's.

So the Mistrals, pass the batten (it had better be able to float) then to the Europe's and the Finns bring it home.

The Stars start, then pass it to the Solings, Tornadoes next & then 470's and the 49'ers bring the team home...

Now we have Women & Mens...events

I reckon we'd have got four Gold in the relays!!

Over to the AYF??
