The completion of the Wimmera-Mallee Pipeline is set to keep the region’s fishing enthusiasts hooked for many years to come.
During the recent pipeline celebrations 8,800 golden perch were released into the Wimmera River – one fish for each kilometre of the pipeline.
This extra water will provide more habitat and improved water quality for fish in the future.
Due to the on-going effects of the drought, water in this region has been an increasingly scarce resource. This scarcity has had a significant impact on the region’s waterways with intermittent and variable flows affecting fish survival.
Although waterways such as the Wimmera River have still been able to support some native and introduced fish species, only recently has Fisheries Victoria been able to stock substantially more fish.
The release of 8,800 golden perch comes on top of 50,000 perch that were released into the river in November last year.
Resumption of fish stocking will directly improve recreational fishing as the fish grow to catchable size and provide a timely tourism boost to local economies and surrounding communities.
