Inflatable Life Jacket World Record Day- North America promotes safety

by Sail-World Cruising on 7 May 2010
The inflating life jacket - more comfortable than the old-fashioned models SW
The Safe Boating Councils of North America are combining to try to get more boaters to use life jackets and promoting the comfort of the inflating jackets. On Thursday May 20 at 11 AM Eastern Daylight Time they want boaters to participate to heighten public awareness of boating safety issues and pre-launch National Safe Boating Week.

Many boaters say that wearing a life jacket makes them hot or uncomfortable. There is a type of life jacket however, that solves these problems -- an inflatable life jacket. And in an effort to get more boaters to voluntarily wear a life jacket, the two councils are having the first-ever Inflatable Life Jacket World Record Day on Thursday, May 20 at 11:00 AM EDT / 8:00 AM PST. At the appointed time, participants at locations across North America will simultaneously activate their inflatable life jackets to claim an unprecedented World Record.

'Inflatable life jackets are very easy to wear,' said Ruth Wood, President of the BoatUS Foundation, which is supporting the idea. 'With these types of life jackets, the old argument against wearing one just doesn't hold water any more. We hope this event increases awareness and boaters will choose to wear a comfortable life jacket more often,' she added.

If you are anywhere in North America, you can get involved in a number of ways. Organize your own event, join an event or simply get together with a couple of friends and have your own 'little jacket inflation party'. The goal is to raise awareness of life jacket wear, boating safety in general and to be part of a world’s record!

After the event check back for the grand total and world’s record results. Individual pictures and videos will be posted under Event pictures and Event videos so you can see what happened in your area.

This event is being organized to promote life jacket wear and general boating safety information. It has been conceived and is being managed by the two Safe Boating Councils, and sponsored in part by Cabela's the 'World's Foremost Outfitter' and www.smartboater.ca, 'the place for boating safety info'.
