30th Annual Wide Bay Water Bay Trailable Yacht Race

by Colin Verrall on 4 May 2010
Crash Test Dummies - Bay to Bay 2010 Julie Geldard http://www.vidpicpro.com
Favourable sailing breeze conditions of 10 to 15 knots with some gusts reaching 25 knots for brief periods provided a spectacular sight of 172 Trailable Yachts drawn to our unique Tin Can Bay Inlet, Great Sandy Strait and Hervey Bay waters bounded by World Heritage Listed Fraser Island to the east and the wilderness areas and small coastal communities to the east.

This area including the Great Sandy National and Marine Parks boasting an amazing sense of maritime history, a display of fauna, flora land, sea and air and spectacular virtually unspoilt scenery.

Once again with the Bay to Bay participants enjoyed the excellent staging and retrieval facilities of the township of Tin Can Bay and City of Hervey Bay with the support provided by the kindred sailing clubs the Hervey Bay Boat Club Yacht Squadron, Maryborough Sailing Club, Tin Can Bay Sailing and Yacht Club, our three volunteer marine rescue organization VMR Hervey Bay, Coast Guard Sandy Straits and Coast Guard Tin Can Bay and members of the communities of Tin Can Bay, Gympie, Tuan, Boonaroo, Maryborough and Hervey Bay.

Trailable yachts from across the vast island nation of ours surrounded by sea with large tracts remnant intertidal yet to be spoilt water ways came to this the Hervey Bay Sailing Club’s 30th Annual Bay to Bay which is currently the largest trailable yacht event to form an amazing fleet including the powerful Mad Max multihull, the state of the art high tech Brace Brace Brace sports monohull through to the tiny Cherry 16 monohull.

Yachts came from as far away as Manouran on the shores of Western Australia around the country through the Melbourne, NSW south coast, Sydney, north coast, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Bribie Island, Sunshine Coast, Cooloola Coast, Sugar Coast, Tin Can Bay, Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Yeppoon, Rockhampton to Bowen in north Queensland from over thirty sailing and yacht clubs to take the opportunity to sail in the company of so many boats and so many sailors to make this a truly interstate, regional and local event for trailable yacht sailors.

Despite favourable conditions Kevin Costin in his first race on Welbourn 24 Brace Brace Brace with first sea trials only held on Thursday, was unable to break Pierre Gal’s Wide Sports Boat Monohull (Conquistador) race record of 4hrs 41mins 27secs by only 4 minutes and George Owen of the Sunshine Coast on Mad Max out of Melbourne missed out on breaking his race record of 3hrs 52mins 08secs set in 2009 by only 2 minutes.

Similar race record attempt stories unfolded for the fancied entries from Graham Coffey in his Standard Sports Monohull Thompson 8 Rush and Andrew Clauson’s performance Type 1 Monohull Tokyo Trash Baby i550

The Bay to Bay provides recognition of sailing effort on many levels including a simple sprint race for the fasted time trophies, class based speed potential corrected time on CBH and OAK rating for standard and performance class, class modified and one of a kind monohulls, SMS rating for sports boat monohulls and OMR rating for multihull boats and personal PBH ratings based the performance potential of the boat, skipper and crew taking into account boat and sails age and skipper and crew experience and ability which are awarded in four boat type groups of both mixed fleet and class fleet groups of boats.

The Bay to Bay Race Officer of 30 years has developed the event to align with the introduction of new high tech One of A Kind, class modified, new high tech class and individually modified class boats which makes the Bay to Bay one of the most inclusive and fairest events on the trailable yacht racing calendar with the ratings published well before the event to give entrants an opportunity to provide an input to the ratings and correct any mistakes and inconsistencies.

The boats are grouped into the boat types of standard, performance standard, sports and wide sports monohulls and standard and sports multihulls which are further divided into Divisions and classes for trophy results and starting with all boats receiving an event medallion, photo DVD and video DVD in a souvenir bag of goodies.
