After many months of back and forth court action, BMW Oracle Racing, the American challenger, won the 33rd America’s Cup Match back in February in Valencia, sweeping past the Swiss defender, Alinghi, to a 2-0 victory. This was an historic race for the oldest trophy in international sport, featuring two of the most innovative boats on the planet.
But the battle on the water paled in comparison to what reportedly happened just before the start of the final race aboard the Race Committee boat. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is staging a luncheon on 28 May, to relive the 33rd America's Cup.
Harold Bennett, former Assistant General Manager of the Squadron and Regatta Director and Principal Race Officer for the 33rd America’s Cup, will be in the 'hot seat' in a conversation with Peter Montgomery, top international yachting commentator, in a ‘chat show’ format about what exactly went on.
Harold will enlighten everyone about his ‘tour of duty’, the races themselves, the structure of the event in terms of how the Swiss saw it and how he saw it and what he thought leading up to the start of Race 2.
There will be the opportunity to also ask questions from the floor.
This is an event not to be missed. Tickets are $55 per person or $490 for a table of ten (including GST) and include a two-course luncheon and wine on the table. This will be a popular event, so early bookings are advised. To secure your place, please contact Reception on (09) 360 6800 or email reception@rnzys.org.nz.
Payment will be required at time of booked - or http://www.rnzys.org.nz/RetailShop/SquadronStoreOnline/tabid/178/List/1/ProductID/63/Default.aspx!click_here to pay online
