Award-winning author, historian and life-long sailor William H. White will speak at the final program of the 2010 Maritime Author Series at Mystic Seaport Wednesday, April 28, from 5:30 – 7:30pm White will discuss When Fortune Frowns, his historical novel about the crew that embarked aboard HMS Pandora in 1790 on a voyage to Tahiti in search of the men who revolted against the Bounty and Captain William Bligh.
The novel includes the capture of some of the mutineers, the disastrous return trip under a tyrannical commander and the final shipwreck on the Great Barrier Reef. Based on original documents, including the correspondence of the participants and a study of the Pandora’s logbook, When Fortune Frowns presents an accurate depiction of 19th-century shipboard life.
The evening begins with a wine and cheese reception at 5:30pm, followed by White’s talk at 6pm. A question and answer session will follow the author’s presentation, along with the chance for one guest to win a free copy of White’s novel.
Tickets are $20 ($15 for members) and available at www.mysticseaport.org/tickets or by calling 860.572.5322.
