Winning makes all the running in ANZAC 18ft skiffs

by Richard Gladwell on 24 Apr 2010
ANZAC skiffs - Day 3 Waitemata Harbour Ross Whitburn
Veteran 18ft skiff skipper John Winning (AUS) sailing the latest in a long line of yachts named Yandoo has taken a commanding lead in the ANZAC 18ft skiff regatta.

Sailing on the Waitemata in winds of 15-25kts, Winning took a first and second place in the two races sailed.

The arrival of fresher winds after the light breezes of the first two days saw some dramatic reversals. None more so that Mark Kennedy (NZ/AUS) formerly a top skipper at junior and youth level, who was lying in second place overall after four races. Kennedy, sailing Coldwell Banker scored an OCS (early starter) and followed up with a DNF (did not finish) to drop to seventh on the points table.

Big mover of the day was CT Sailbattens (Alex Vallings) who moved into a second place tie with JF Hillebrand, Phil Airey, who are locked up on 18pts each, with Mark Kennedy's younger brother Scott in fourth just one point astern on 19 pts, sailing Yamaha.

Winning is almost assured of then title, the other two podium places will be decided on the final day, Sunday.
