Veteran Hobart yachtsman Roger Jackman has won many harbour and offshore races in Tasmanian waters with his Davidson 52, Doctor Who, and a second place in Saturday’s final pennant race with the Derwent Sailing Squadron gave ‘The Doctor’ another fine victory.

Doctor Who won the Division 1 PHS pennant at the DSS by just two points from John Mill’s Jibe Talkin’ which took second place on a countback from TasPaints (Ian Stewart).

The final result went right down to the wire. Jackman knew he had to do well in the second race of the day after Taspaints had placed second to Don Calvert’s Intrigue, with Doctor Who sixth and Jibe Talkin’ seventh, in the first race.

In the light breeze, Jackman steered a fine race to finish second to TasPaints, with Jibe Talkin’ placing fourth on corrected time. This gave the pennant to Doctor with 23 points after two discards, Jibe Talkin’ and Taspaints each ending with 25 points, the countback favouring Jibe Talkin’.

Over more than three decades Roger Jackman has been one of Hobart’s most successful yachtsmen, winning the Maria Island Race six times with Doctor Who and scoring six overall wins in the Bruny Island Race, along with earlier victories with Brer Fox and Margaret Rintoul II.

To round off the last day of the DSS pennants, Doctor Who also won the last Division 1 race under IRC handicaps to finish third in that pennant series to Harold Clark’s Invincible and Don Calvert’s Intrigue. Invincible had a net 10 points, Intrigue 19 and Doctor Who 24.

Invincible also won the AMS pennant, finishing the season with six wins for a net score of 8 points, second going to Intrigue on 15 points, third to Sally Rattle’s Archie on 25 points.

In the Farr 40 division, Stephen Boyes’ won the final races on Saturday to finish the series on 7 points, winning five races over the summer. Voodoo Chile (Lloyd Clark) finished second on 14 points, War Games (Wayne Banks-Smith) third on 19 points.

Peter Giblin completed a pennant winning season in the 9metre division by steering Just Jones to a last race win, finishing the season with 16 points, comfortably clear of Spare Time (Shane Powell) on 21 points and Sunview Homes (Robert Woehler) on 22 points. Playwright (John Williams) won the first race of the day from Just Jones.

Just two points separated the three top boats in Division 2, with Peter Haros’ Wings Three finished third in Saturday’s single race to finish with 11 points, holding off last race winner Miss Conduct (Robin Fleming) on 12 points and Hornet (Neville Georgeson) on 13 points.

In Division 3, Edris (David Wynn) threw out a strong challenge by winning the final race, but still fell two points short of beating Malcolm Cooper’s Kaiulani for the pennant. Kaiulani ended the season on 13 points, Edris and Don’t Bug Me (Peter Bugg) on 16 points.

In the final race, Edris beat Don’t Bug Me by just one second on corrected time and with two wins over the season, took out second place overall on a countback.
