Disappointed News Corp crashes about to the field in Volvo Ocean race

by Volvo Ocean race media on 10 Jun 2002
Jez Fanstone, skipper of News Corp after finishing fifth overall in the
Volvo Ocean Race 2001 - 2002

Q: How has it been?

A: It’s been torture. After 32, 000 miles of ocean racing, it comes down
to a buoy-filled lottery to a certain extent. But all credit to the Amer
Sports One guys, they did a nice job and they got a result and hat’s off
to them.

Q: In spite of this way to finish the race, it has been a good campaign
and there must be positives to take away from it?

A: Absolutely. The last few hours haven’t worked out, but 36 hours out of
nine months of yacht racing and two year’s preparation is a very small
price to pay for what has been a most exhilarating, scary at times, happy,
highs, lows, experience with a fantastic team. A fantastic team of people
both on the shore side and on the boat. We’ve had 30 people involved with
the boat and then we had all the News Corp people. It’s been a huge
experience and everybody onboard has loved it. We set out with a dream to
be on the podium in Kiel and to run a good campaign and I think we’ve
achieved one, and didn’t achieve the other, but it’s been a fantastic
experience and I think it’s been a happy ship.
