Laser Nationals get underway as Young Guns make their mark

by Sail-World on 24 Jan 2010
Andrew Murdoch competing in the Laser event - Singapore Airlines Sail Auckland Terry Fong www.afaphoto.co.nz

The first day of the Laser Nationals saw a promising start, in Timaru, with strong south westerly's. Unfortunately they died out over the day which made navigating the swell with chop difficult in the last race.

With most of the interest on the Open event and the clash between top ranked Michael Bullot against the 2008 Olympic representative, Andrew Murdoch, returning from a 12 month plus time-out period to concentrate on his university studies ahead of a 2012 Olympic campaign.

They came up against a new group of sailors, all with some very accomplished performances under their belts.

In the end it was a case of several cats amongst the pigeons as the new group took on the established players and performed very well in comparison. Andy Maloney leads the regatta after the first day, with Murdoch in second place and Bullot in sixth overall.
