SCYA Women's Sailing Convention kicks off Feb. 6

The premier sailing convention for women is set to launch on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Corona del Mar, CA. Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S.) is primary sponsor of the 21st Annual Women's Sailing Convention, presented by the Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA).
The event is open to all women from novices to experts and the 2010 program is packed with 28 workshops to choose from -- both on and off the water -- including: Welcome Aboard (for beginners), Suddenly Single-handed, Sail Trim, Cruising Preparedness, Provisioning, Racing Intro, Diesels, Basic Navigation, Anchoring, Spinnaker Rigging, First Aid and Going Offshore. Top women sailors from all over Southern California, many of them U.S. Coast Guard-licensed operators, present all of the workshops.
'This is the event for women to learn and ask every question they have always wanted an answer to,' said Gail Hine, the event's organizer. 'It's a no-pressure learning environment and a great chance to pick up new skills and network with other women boaters,' she added.
To cap off the event, the dinner guest speaker will be Capt. Patty Garfield who holds a 100-ton license in addition to being one of the few women who have achieved success in the yacht brokerage business. She owns Farallone Yacht Sales, Inc., the exclusive dealer for Catalina Yachts in Newport Beach, CA, and will talk about the first race she ever entered -- the 2005 Transpac from Los Angeles to Hawaii -- which she completed with her friend, Capt. Diane Murray. Their entry was the first double-handed female crew, and Capt. Garfield will discuss how the duo learned and laughed their way across the Pacific Ocean.
The event is a perennial sell-out. This year's participation is limited to only about 300 attendees. Registration is $165 (paid before January 30), which includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, all workshops, handouts, and a skipper's bag.
