Miami warmed up just in time MLK weekend with great conditions for the 2010 O'Pen BIC Mid Winters at Shake A Leg Miami.
Twelve races, speed relay, and freestyle challenged the sailors aged 7 to 14. Team CheeseHead traveled from as far as Wisconsin to take advantage of the fun, but it was Miami YC who brought their fleet of twenty O'Pen BICs and dominated the standings. Ian Sanders from Edison Sailing Center pulled out the Over 11 division, while Orange Bowl Opti winner, Geronimo Norez, took the racing in the Under 12 Division. Equally important, the O'Pen BIC Class recognizes the sailor(s) who exhibit the best spirit and have the most fun. This year's awards went to Brian Hollenbeck and seven-year-old Merlin Plant who showed amazing fortitude and sheer joy, even in the overpowering windy races.
The Mid Winters is part of a six race O'Pen BIC Sunshine Series that winds up at Miami YC April 3-4. Top sailors from the series qualify for the World O'Pen Cup this summer in Europe. The O'Bic Mid Winters was held in conjunction with the Alex Caviglia Blue Water Classic held annually at Shake A Leg Miami before the Miami Olympic Classes Regatta.
