2010 Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race - Everyone has Finished

by Guy Perrin on 16 Jan 2010
Big Sailor’s Gun - 2010 Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race William Spruance
Everyone is accounted for in Key West this morning. Just Right and Karma were the last yachts to cross the finish line last evening. After a short rest, many of the yachts will be getting ready for Key West Race WeeK.

Paige Brooks, from the SORC reported: 'At 9:50pm here in Key West all of the racing boats are finished and accounted for. Just Right and Karma wrapped up the regatta, crossing the finish line after nightfall in the Key West Harbor entrance. After a light air start to the race, the competitors were challenged with skirting the current and finding breeze along the beach front in Broward County and Miami. The boats spread out and slowly rounded Fowey Rocks and then the breeze finally picked up. Several of the PHRF and IRC boats broke into pairs and small groups that effectively became their own mini-races. As the velocity increased into the 20s, many of the mid-pack boats found themselves peeling kites and blast reaching under code zeros and jib tops, constantly checking themselves against their competitors. For now, everyone is in and happy, and starting to tell the tall tales of the last 36 hours.'

The evnt was highly succesful, with a record number of entries, and bodes well for the future of offshore racing on the north american East coast.
