Australian 13ft Skiff Championships - Sydney Skiffs dominate

by Mark Graham on 6 Jan 2010
Heat 3 start 13 foot skiffs on Lake Macquarie - 5th Australian 13 foot skiff championships Annette Brennan

The 5th Australian Championships for the 13ft Skiffs are being held on Lake Macquarie at Belmont, NSW from the Belmont 16ft Skiff Club, this year again in conjunction with the 16ft Skiff Australian Championships.

The 22 strong fleet has seen a variety of conditions ranging from 6 knots to 12 knots with North Side Sailing School from Middle Harbour skippered by Scott Cotton and Rob Size winning three of the four heats.

The fourth heat was won by MBH 2 from Manly sailed by Olivia Price. The fleet this year has a contingent of six skiffs racing from the Darling Point Sailing Squadron in Manly Brisbane. They include both guys and girls sailing, as does the entire fleet.

This is the second time only that the Brisbane Club has sailed 13ft Skiffs in the Australian Championships and it appears that their own fleet is continuing to grow adding to the National strength of the class.

Of the 22 skiffs racing approximately 50% of the skippers and crews are female showing that the girls are just as capable of achieving results as the guys.

The series so far has seen some very close racing at the front end and middle of the fleet. This has provided all the competitors with the opportunity to pace themselves against others and tune up their own skills.

Racing continues on Thursday, Friday and final day Saturday with heats 5, 6 and 7 respectively.

And so, it begins…
Grand Final not run yet, but our Hobart coverage begins with something very cool Maybe a tad earlier than last year, which I think was after the Grand Final, but the 100th entrant seemed like a good place to set things off. Now with that said, Sail-World's Hobart coverage begins.
