Sharpie National Championship - South Australians dominate day

by Peter Campbell on 5 Jan 2010
Intense rivalry at the mark between Tassie and the South Australians. - 67th Australian Sharpie Championship Hobart Day Four Images Jane Austin

South Australian sailors not only dominated today's race six of the Australian Sharpie National championship on the River Derwent but they now also fill the top three places overall, with one final race to sail tomorrow.

Best placed Tasmanian Ric Buchanan, sailing One Hump or Two, has now dropped to fourth in overall standings, today finishing sixth.

On another day of changing wind direction and strength, principal race officer Nick Hutton had to 'pull the pin' on the first attempt to start the 27 boat fleet. However, the next attempt proved successful in a breeze that ranged from 5 knot to a peak of 18 knots before easing away later in the race.

The strong bid by the South Australians to retain the national title for this iconic Australian adult dinghy class comes as no surprise, with an 11-boat team contesting the championship, conducted by Sandy Bay Sailing Club. Tasmania has only six boats in the fleet.

Jason Heritage, the youngest South Australian skipper among a team of veterans (including 40 and 50 year-old Sharpie devotees) won today's race with Bread Run from fellow team members Malcolm Higgins, skippering Blur and
Dave Higgins, helming All Scoobed Out.

After six heats Bread Run heads the leader board with 9 points after one discard, Blur is on 11 points, All Scoobed Out on 14 and One Hump or Two on 21 points. Queenslander Andrew Wells, skippering Jess, is fifth overall on 22 points.
