Two True wins 2009 Sydney Hobart - protests dismissed

Dr Andrew Saies and his Two True team have won the 2009 Rolex Sydney Tattersalls Cup.

Its been a long day in Hobart with the five man International Jury only just announcing the protest against the IRC overall leader had been dismissed.

There had been an incident on the Harbour soon after the start in which the Tasmanian boat 'She's the Culprit had incurred damage and had retired. While the initial hearing was scheduled for 10am, it was evident that the role of Nick Athineos' Beneteau 47 Kioni was crucial in the whole matter and she was one of the last boats to finish the race, the hearing was deferred until the arrival of the skipper.

Two True had collided with She's the Culprit rounding the first mark inside Sydney Harbour head, holing her and she retired from the race.

The jury met at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania to hear evidence for 90 minutes and then deliberated for a further hour before delivering their verdicts on five separate protests.

Two True, in her defence, argued that the actions of Kioni forced her in to a chain reaction collision with She's the Culprit.

Kioni was disqualified for Sydney Harbour incident. Protests against Colortile, She's the Culprit and Two True were dismissed.

First and second on IRC corrected time standings were two Beneteau First 40s' Two True (Andrew Saies), Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia and Wicked (Mike Welsh) from Sandringham Yacht Club. Third overall was Ian Mason's Sydney 38 Next and fourth was Steven Proud's Sydney 38 Swish.

After the protest was dismissed, the South Australian Orthopedic surgeon sail 'I’ve been dreaming of winning this trophy since I was 12 years old' Two True is the fourth South Australian winner of the Tattersall’s Cup. The last was Kevan Pearce’s SAP Ausmaid in 2000.

Earlier today the IOR Farr 40 Aurora was also penalised. The International Jury imposed a 30% scoring penalty for a breach of RRS 41

The official prizegiving for the 2009 Rolex Sydney Hobart will be held at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania tomorrow morning, 11am.
