Heemskirk Consolidated Hobart races - Sked update

by Jennifer McGuigan on 30 Dec 2009
Very focussed on the line, which at this stage was a few miles up ahead - Heemskirk Consolidated Melbourne to Hobart John Curnow

Heemskirk Consolidated West Coast Race update.

Where’s the wind? After all this is the notorious west coast of Tasmania. At the midday sked the fleet that are still on the coast reported North westerly winds 8 – 12 knots with a 2 – 3 metre swell.

The leaders in this west coast race have got a bit of everything, currently a southerly at 10 knots but wait 30 mins and it will change. The crews are on their toes making the sail changes and watching for the wind changes.

Andrew Lawrence’s Jazz Player has taken a small lead from Peter Cox’s Icefire, it is still anyone’s race as they make their way to the compulsory call at Cape Connella. They are closely followed by Lawrie Ford’s Spirit of Downunder and Angus Fletcher’s Tevake II, these two are within 400 metres of each other.

Jazz Player is due into Hobart at approximately 7pm tonight.

In a contrast of coasts the east coast fleet are enjoying northerlies at 23 knots, they are at last enjoying the run down the coast. Tasman Island is reporting north north easterlies at 23 knots. Storm Bay however is another story, at this time the wind has dropped out from across Storm Bay and up to the mouth of the Derwent.

With Ocean Skins, Veloce and XLR8 safely sitting tied up to Elizabeth Street pier the waiting game is now on for the ever important handicap honours.

Godzilla the 31 foot Hick from Royal Yacht Club of Victoria and Under Capricorn from Royal Brighton Yacht Club are the danger boats for the current IRC handicap leader Veloce.

Grabbing chances with both hands
Can bad weather actually lead to more sailing? There's been no getting away from the fact that it's been a pretty miserable start to 2024 weather-wise in the UK. February saw record rainfall (yes, I know we're famed for our rain over here), it's been seriously windy and generally chilly.
