On the first sunny day that Sydney has seen since Christmas Eve, the first race of the 45th Hartley TS16 Australian Championships was sailed from Drummoyne Sailing Club on the Parramatta River.
The highly competitive fleet of 23 boats took to the water in a 10-15 knots sou’easterly breeze, sailing a course around the islands and marks in the river.
John Gillard’s ‘Triple G’ led the fleet in the early part of the race followed closely by Neil Johnson’s ‘Tranquil’ and Graeme Fleming’s Murphy’s Law’. At the second mark \‘Murphy’s Law’ had taken the lead with four time Australian Champion Michael Horvath’s 'True Blue’ second and ‘Tranquil’ lying third.
Eric Partland’s ‘Uncle Roy’ took the lead about half way through the race and held back ‘True Blue’ and ‘Triple G’ who tussled closely for second and third place.
‘Uncle Roy’ took the gun by a clear margin followed by ‘True Blue’, ‘Triple G’, ‘Murphy’s Law’ and Ken Marslew’s ‘Ambulance’.
