The World's Best Sailors Bar - It's official!

Everyone knows that finding the bar at the end of a sail - no matter how long or short - is the next most important thing to getting there in one piece.

Scuttlebutt Europe has recently conducted a 'Best Sailors' Bar' in the world competition.

The voters came up with some amazing bars around the world, but the bar finally found to be the Best of the Best is located in no other than the Portuguese Archipelago of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean.

Peter Cafe Sport, in Horta, is located 750nm from Lisbon and around 2000nm from North America - not the remotest Sailors' Bar in the world, but it must come close.

It's a legend among long range international yachties that 'you haven't seen the real Horta if you haven't been to 'the Peter.' '

The bar is a home from home and a place to eat, drink, be merry, collect your mail, change your money, meet people, find crew, lose crew, or find out anything you need to know about the island. Located across from the marina, the third generation bar not only boasts a great atmosphere, but also houses the island's scrimshaw museum - a collection of hundreds of pieces of scrimshaw work carved on whale tooth and jawbone.

For about 70 years, old Peter (Jose Azevedo) welcomed visiting sailors at the cafe bar, once owned by his father. Sadly, old Peter passed away in 2006, but his son Jose Henrique Azevedo carries on the tradition.

...and then there are the others, none in Europe, no less than five in the Caribbean area, three more in the USA, one in Asia and none in the South Pacific:

2. Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club - Hong Kong
3. IYAC - Newport RI, USA
4. Maddie's Sail Loft - Marblehead, MA USA
5. The Candy Store - Newport, RI, USA
6. Le Select - St. Barts
7. Bitter End Yacht Club - British Virgin Islands
8. Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, Hamilton Bermuda
9. Foxy's Tamarind Bar and Grill - Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands
10. Willy T - Norman Island, British Virgin Islands

Thank you Scuttlebutt Europe, for sorting out this very important pecking order of bars!
