Cruising Yacht Club of SA Western Basin open day Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia
Members and visitors to the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia, arguably one of the most progressive clubs on the Great Australian Bight, enjoy a plethora of facilities envied by boat owners in other states.
With the opening of Marina West in March 2009, completed despite the pall of financial gloom hovering over the global marine industry, it’s fast becoming one of Adelaide’s most dynamic sailing hubs. Officially opening the marina, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce said, 'The Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia has had the foresight to look ahead to position the club for the future. Not only will there be benefits to members, but its activity will bring additional income opportunities to small business in the construction, boating, retail and tourism industries.'
According to Executive Officer Craig Evans, the income generated from the Marina West development will assist CYCSA replace the original marina facility as well as to help fund the proposed redevelopment of the clubhouse, storage and training facilities.
With the completion of Marina West, the club is not only welcoming new members who are attracted by modern berthing facilities, it has opened up access for large vessel owners, with berthing now available for vessels up to 35m. Wet berths are offered in a choice of single or double pens, with each pen allocated a storage locker. With a membership base currently hovering around 1200, Evans anticipates this will increase to 1500 as redevelopment progresses.
Reasons to Linger
Whether your interest is in racing, cruising, fishing, socialising or simply getting out on the water, CYCSA is a proactive club with many facets.
.
Within the fully equipped clubhouse is Mariners Dining Room and the Dockside Bar, both popular meeting points for members and visitors, particularly the outdoor deck overlooking the marina. Sunday breakfasts are especially lively, even more so when coinciding with special events or regattas.
The Members lounge adjacent to the bar has an internet connected computer and a ‘honour system’ borrowing library. There’s a waterfront barbeque area with lawns and landscaped gardens, as well as a sail drying space. Meeting rooms are utilised by the various associations active within the club.
Members and non-members wishing to develop their boating, navigation and safety skills, or simply to keep abreast of ever-changing racing rules, have access to full training facilities at the Marine Academy. The Academy is a recognised Yachting Australia Training Centre, with courses ranging throughout the year from introductory through to advanced.
Local Essentials
Fuel and a chandlery are located nearby at North Haven Marine and Fuel. LPG refills are available at the club.
Across the gulf at Port Vincent, members and guests have access to the clubs’ marina at Port Vincent, a popular weekend destination for Adelaide sailors.
Maintenance & Repairs
CYCSA members are extremely proud of the clubs slipping facilities, with state of the art haul out and hard stand area. Available to members free of charge is a crane wharf with a fixed arm radial crane for mast removal, enabling boat owners to service and maintain their rigging without the need for vessel haul out. Also acessible to members is a workshop and maintenance shed. The shed is equipped with essential equipment and tools such as drill press, grinders, sanders, workbench and vice, creating a convivial wokshop for boat owners to tinker in.
