Extreme 40 crews do the Compass Room stairs. Huge points for style. Guy Nowell

There’s another long-standing favourite occupation at the RHKYC, and that’s the Compass Room stairs 'toboggan run'. It’s the sort of thing that seems like a good idea right after you’ve climbed over the bell…
It looks further down from the top than it does from the bottom looking up, but never mind, there’s street cred and claims of athleticism at stake here, so let’s have a go:
Fairly orthodox two-tray racing.
Surfing dude style – hang ten on the Tai Ping carpet.
This going to be a disaster…
It is a disaster…
…and it hurts!
(Someone has suggested that the Club scrap the interview to go from Ordinary to Full membership, and instead require that candidates pass from being Slimy Pollywogs to Trusty Shellbacks (local equivalent) by going over the bell in under 30 secs and then completing a run down the stairs on a tray).
