The first ever regatta for the Flying Tiger 10 class will be staged in December 2009 hosted by the Royal Motor Yacht Club (RMYC) Newport NSW, which is keen to support of this growing class of affordable Sport yachts.
There are already two Flying Tiger class yachts racing with the RMYC in its busy twilight Series.
The RMYC certainly is well skilled in regatta management. Its Monday night twilight series is one of the biggest yachting events in Australia, and regularly attracting 96 starters over six divisions.
Sailing Co-coordinator for RMYC Peter Gould believes the sheltered waters of Pittwater will be ideal for these speedy 31-foot racing yachts. He hopes the event will draw as many Sydney-Harbour based boats as possible.
The strongest cell of Flying Tiger racing is currently on Sydney Harbour. However, the class association believes a number of the top boats will journey to Pittwater to contest this inaugural event on the weekend of December 5 and 6.
Local FT10 skipper, James Hill who races TIGA with RMYC says a Tiger regatta is just what’s needed for Pittwater. He’s raced on the Harbour and Pittwater and believes visiting skippers will find Pittwater waters ideal for Tigers. It will also help to win over more converts to the class on this waterway.
Flying Tiger crews from other states are also most welcome though distance is a problem unless they have road trailers. The Pittwater Regatta will consist of three windward leeward races on Saturday and a ‘passage’ race on Sunday to add some variety. Great prizes, free berthing and brilliant club facilities will round a great weekend for all who contest this new regatta.
