Continuing a tradition that began in 1998, Kata Beach Resort & Spa will again be the host venue of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, a record that brings immense pride to Kata Group Resorts Thailand Chairman, Pamuke Achariyachai.

This year, the closing day of the regatta coincides with His Majesty the King’s birthday, 5th of December, and although very special celebratory plans have already been laid by the Kata Group Resorts Thailand, the Chairman is keeping them very close to his chest.

“To host the regatta is a great honour and I personally believe that Phuket has all the right ingredients for the Regatta to grow. When the opportunity for the new host venue for the Regatta became available I had no hesitation in going for it,” said the Kata Group Resorts Thailand Chairman. “The sea has always been my personal passion and I strongly believe that Phuket can be South East Asia’s fore-most marine leisure playground, including for offshore powerboat racing,” he added.

The Kata Beach Resort & Spa continues to develop and improve its facilities and services in response to changing, and ever more demanding guest expectations. This year sees improvements to the Atrium terrace area, adding to the resort’s facilities that include an authentic Italian restaurant and a beachside “Coco Palm” eatery overlooking “Koh Poo” or Crab Island. The hotel has two beachside swimming pools with Jacuzzis and a swim-up bar, plus the popular Kanda Spa.

Kevin Whitcraft, President of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta organising committee said, “The Regatta itself is now in its 23rd year and since 1988 the Kata Beach Resort & Spa has been the host venue for an event that grows in stature each year. Today, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is one of the top events in the yachting world, both regionally and internationally, and attracts around 2,000 additional high spending tourists over a seven day period.”

“The organising committee is of course thrilled that the resort will continue its unbroken tradition of being the host venue for the Regatta. All of us are once again looking forward to a wonderful week of world class yacht racing and the renowned social events that are part of the Regatta.”

Sponsors of the 2009 regatta include Kata Group, Thai Beverage Plc, Mont Clair, Mom Tri's Boathouse and The Moorings. Media partners include Asia Pacific Boating, Blue Wave 90.5FM, Ensign Media, Multihull World, The Nation, Phuket Gazette, Prestige Thailand, Sail-World.com, Superyacht Asia magazine and Yacht Style.

The 23rd Phuket King's Cup Regatta will take place 28 November - 5 December, 2009, off Kata Beach, Phuket, Thailand. Under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King, the Regatta is organised by the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organising Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.

The appeal of offshore
Is there still appeal? Have we made it too onerous? Why would someone take it up now? I had been pondering. Yes. Marquee events have no issue attracting entrants. Middle Sea, Transpac, Cape to Rio, Fastnet, and Hobart all spring to mind instantly, but what of the ‘lesser' races? Lots of boats in pens (slips) a lot of the time
