29er EUROCUP - Day 1

Today’s 1PM warning signal kicked off the 2009 edition of the 29er and 29erXX Eurocup sailing event. Southerly winds, blowing strong and steady around 8 meters per second, powered the day’s first race. Windspeed intensified to 11 m/s for the day’s second and third races. On the water, thirty-one 29er crews represented seven nation-states (GER, CRO, ITA, NOR, SWE, AUT, SUI); nine 29erXX representing four nation-states (GBR, GER, ITA, FIN).

Among the 29er Class, Germany’s Justus Schmidt and Max Boehme (GER 23) top the temporary scorecharts with first-day results 1, 3, 2. Second position for Domagoj Fizulic and Leon Ostrez (CRO 1341) (4, 2, 4). Third position in the temporary overall scores and ranks held by Paul Kohlhoff and Tim Kramer (GER 1280) (2, 4, 5). Host organization Fraglia Vela Riva has two crews near the top, respectively holding fourth and fifth positions. Each of them also won a race today. That’s Riccardo Camin and Lorenzo Franceschini (ITA 8) in fourth position (with scores 5, 6, 1) and Augusto Poropat and Giacomo Grosselli (ITA 1209) in fifth (with scores 13, 1, 3). Fraglia also has an all-female crew, fairly well-positioned at fifteenth in the temporary overall scores and rankings: Alice Agnoletto and Giuditta Colombi (scores 19, 13, 17).

The 29erXX Class’ temporary overall scores and rankings are topped by two British crews. Katie Nurton and Louise Walker (GBR 2) hold first position with scores 2, 1, 1. In second position David Hall and Hanna Dahlborg (GBR 777) with scores 1, 4, 4. Third position for Phillip and Thilo Kramer (GER 1) (3, 2, 5).

The event continues tomorrow with another three races; warning signal at 9AM.

Day 2

Four races were sailed today, with steady southerly winds blowing around six – eight meters-per-second. Justus Schmidt and Max Boehme (GER 23) maintain yesterday’s lead among the 29er Class with scores 1, (3), 2, 1, 2, 2, 2. Following close behind them are two crews from the host organization Fraglia Vela Riva: Riccardo Camin and Lorenzo Franceschini (ITA 8) (5, (6), 1, 2, 4, 1, 1) and Augusto Poropat and Giacomo Grosselli (ITA 1209) ((13), 1, 3, 3, 1, 13, 6). Fraglia’s Alice Agnoletto and Giuditta Colombi hold the sixteenth position in the temporary overall scores and rankings.

The 29erXX Class, despite its smaller number of competitors, proved itself amply capable of furnishing surprise and suspense: a deadlock tie between Daniele Poli (ITA 4 – C.V. Orta) and Phillip Mueller (GER 51): two crews with equal numbers of scorepoints. In fact, Poli’s performance yesterday showed no indications of potential victory.

Tomorrow’s final two races will determine the outcomes in these exciting competitions: warning signal to be given at 9:30AM.

Day 3

Northerly winds powered the event’s final two races, blowing initially around seven meters – per – second, then tapering off to a disappointing two m/s.

Among the 29er Class, Riccardo Camin and Lorenzo Franceschini (ITA 8 – Fraglia Vela Riva) claim event victory (scores (5), (6), 1, 2, 4, 1, 1, 1, 2). Second position overall for Germany’s Justus Schmidt and Max Boeme (GER 23), thanks to their topnotch performances during the event’s first two days (scores 1, 3, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2, (6), (17)). Third for Augusto Poropat and Giacomo Grosselli (ITA 1209 – Fraglia Vela Riva) (scores ((13), 1, 3, 3, 1, (13), 6, 2, 1). Alice Agnoletto and Giuditta Colombi (ITA 1512 – Fraglia Vela Riva) conclude with a respectable sixteenth position in the final scores and rankings.

Daniele Poli and Michele Monzini (ITA 4) triumph in the 29erXX Class, thanks to two first-place finishes today…..not to mention yesterday’s fine performances (scores (5), (3), 3, 3, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1). Second for Germany’s Phillip Mueller and Moritz Janich (GER 51) (scores 4, (6), 2, 2, 1, 2, 2, (ocs), 2). Meanwhile, British sailors David Hall and Nicola Smith (GBR 777) take the bronze (scores 1, (4), 4, 1, 4, 4, (5), 3, 3).

The Closing ceremony and prizegiving was at 1 pm on host organization Fraglia Vela Riva’s outdoor terrace. Appropriately breathtaking panoramic view of northern Garda Lake: its weather in-sync with its well-timed events.
