Recent Events:

New Zealand Winter Champs – Murray’s Bay October 2 – 4th 2009

These were held at Murray’s Bay between 29th Sept to 4th October..

Unfortunately the 2 day coaching session was marred by strong winds and lightning strikes on the Tuesday afternoon and the sailors were not able to train on the Wednesday due to Tsunami warnings.

The racing itself began on the Friday with a practice day and was followed on Saturday and Sunday with full racing. There were six 29ers entered for the racing so the competition was strong with sailors from all over New Zealand competing. This event should help raise the profile of the 29er class.

The overall winners were Dan Meehan and Chris Harris of Ravensbourne, Dunedin with Chelsea Whitburn and Gabrielle Cross coming second and Phil and Tim Evans third. The sailing conditions were fairly rough with some big waves on the Sunday.

A couple of Auckland crews are currently considering attending the Australian National champs in Adelaide over New Year.

Martyn Sly, the President of the Australian 29er Association is keen to see NZers come over and compete and is happy to assist anyone in finding a boat to charter and accommodation. The Nationals are being sailed out of the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia from 29 Dec to 4 Jan. This is followed by the Australian Youth Champs at LargsBay (just down the road) from the 6th to 10th of Jan. Martyn's contact details can be found on the Australian 29er website.

Another Auckland crew are hoping to compete in the Sail Melbourne regatta in late December.

Auckland 29er Club Sailing

Kohimarama Yacht Club and Howick Sailing Club have joined forces to run 29er club sailing on alternate Sundays for the 2009/2010 season commencing this Sunday (111 Oct) at Howick. By doing this they hope to have a minimum of 5 x 29ers racing each Sunday, building to around 8 in the second half of the season. 29er sailors from other clubs are very welcome to join in.

Yachting NZ briefings - 23 September 2009

In case you missed the 23rd September 2009 edition of Yachting NZ briefings, here is an extract

Youth Team Nomination & Selection Guidelines

The Nomination and Selection guidelines for the 2010 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team are now available on the Yachting New Zealand website.

Sailors with an eye on representing in the 29er class should note that even though the pointscore will be based only on the 29er National Championships in this division. They will need to have sailed in one of the youth classes at the Sail Auckland regatta.

This year men and women will sail the same equipment in the double handed, single handed and windsurf disciplines in the trials. The multihull once again will be decided by the selectors based on nominations from the double-handed pointscore, and also the Hobie 16 National Championships.

The venue for the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships 2010 will be the Atakoy Marina, located on the EuropeanCoast of Istanbul at the southern end of the BosphorusStrait in Turkey.

Istanbul 2010 will mark the 40th edition of the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, the world’s top youth sailing event, with over 300 young sailors from 60 plus nations expected to attend. Competition will take place from 8-17 July across eight events, open to competitors younger than 19 years on
31 December 2010

The 2010 event will see the return of the International 29er to the equipment list however this year it will be a standalone open class alongside the International 420 as the Boys & Girls single handed equipment.

Many previous winners of the Youth Worlds have gone on to become sailing superstars such as Volvo Ocean Race winner Stuart Bannatyne, triple Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie (GBR) and three-time America’s Cup winning skipper Sir Russell Coutts.

World Champions

Steven Thomas of Australia repeated his title of 29er World Champion adding Blair Tuke of New Zealand as his crew this time around.  The duo carried on their top sailing from the 49er Worlds the week prior pairing up and stepping into the 29er to place no worse than 3rd, and sailing so consistently they were able to not sail the final 2 races.

The battle on the final day was between the Outteridge siblings also of Australia.  In the end big brother Nathan with skipper Lauren Jeffries out sailed his sister to take 2nd overall. Haylee with Iain Jensen as crew finished 3rd overall just 2points behind.

Max Richardson and Alex Groves of GBR were the top placing youth team finished 4th in the Gold fleet while Ida Marie Baad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen of Denmark won the top placing female team.

The 54 boat silver fleet was won by Americans Paris Henken with Chris Rast as crew, another 49er Olympic sailor in the front of the boat.  The Bronze fleet was won by Sinem Kurtbay and Ville Bergman of Finland with the Emerald fleet winners Casey McDermott and Chantelle Boudreau of Canada.

The186 teams represented 20 countries including entries from Hong Kong, the Cayman Islands and United Arab Emirates as well as established European, America, Argentina and the ever strong Australians show the broad reach and popularity of the skiff and acceptance worldwide The 29er is an open class in the ISAF Youth World Championship.  This was the largest 29er World Championship it the classes 10 year history.

Also sailing in the 29er worlds were Lorenzo Franceschini and Riccardo Camin, the current Italian 29er champions who sailed in the 29er South Island Champs in Dunedin in March 2009. They finished a very good 8th placing overall.
