Rumors that Canadian boatbuilder Doral International had are not true according to Erwin Zecha, sole owner of the company.
Boating Industry Canada contacted Zecha for comments about recent reports of the company's failure and Zecha was quick to correct the information.
'Doral International has filed for protection from their creditors,' Zecha said, 'which in Canada, is similar to the American Chapter 11 process. We are trying to reorganize to find either new financing or a buyer for full or partial ownership of the company. We have had offers and there is currently an offer on the table, but getting through this process takes time. We believe that this process will allow Doral to emerge as a strong company again and the reorganization is so that the business can function in the future.'
Zecha explained that production at the company’s facility in Grand Mere, Quebec had stopped in July but instead of their customary two to three week summer shutdown, production was stopped for six weeks.
Then limited production resumed until three weeks ago. Zecha said that the expectation is that the full Doral International line of cruisers and the Elite sport boat line will again be offered. Most notably, Zecha stated that production is planned to resume in the next two weeks.
In addition to that, Erwin Zecha stated that Doral International plans to exhibit boats at the Toronto International Boat Show in January 2010 although he noted that the trustee has the final say on this process.
'Under the circumstances, we believe that this course of action was the prudent thing to do,' said Zecha.
Erwin Zecha’s other businesses, the Doral Marine Resort on Georgian Bay and the Boat Max boat dealership in Barrie, Ontario are not affected.
