Regatta organiser, Ross Sutherland, with the Morton Bay girls team SW
Report - Day One. Secondary school teams from around the country, are at Algies Bay, for combined teamsracing regatta, which includes the first interdominion Girls competition between Australia and New Zealand. Morton Bay College represented Australia and Napier Girls High represented New Zealand.

The event includes the first Koru Knitwear 2009 NZ Girls Teams Racing Championships. Generously supported by Koru Knitware, the racing between the girls teams has been exciting. Napier Girls High and New Plymouth Girls High getting good results on the board after a training day on Wednesday when they had the opportunity for top level coaching from the Olympic coach for Womens match racing team, Graeme Sutherland.

Napier Girls are leading 3 - 1 against Morton Bay this stage.

A combined South Island girls team benefited from the coaching on Wednesday by Joseph Wright with Olivia and Kendra showing some good skills. The investment by Bruce Lund into the local Timaru scene a couple of years ago is starting produce dividends.

Lee Stuart from Marlborough College's Sailing Club was able to gain valuable experience sailing with Morton Bay team during training day and part of the first day, filling in until the last member of their team arrived.

There have been many interesting results, such as the South Island Girls team beating the highy favoured New Plymouth Girls team. Westlake Girls, came very close to beating Morton Bay, only to lose by a few inches in a race which the lead changed back and forth.

And it's also the annual Spring Regatta.

The weather was mainly light, just right for teams racing. Two teams from Kerikeri High school are leading the way, showing some very polished teams racing. Lindisfarne are up there and showing promise for the future.

For many, a playful group of dolphins provided an enjoyable side-show.
