A fleet of eight Phuket-based Tasars have confirmed they will take part in the 23rd Phuket King's Cup Regatta.

Following the hosting of the Tasar Worlds in Phuket in 2007, the level of interest in Tasars on the Island has grown. Husband and wife team Andrew de Bruin and Donna Stephens, finished 53 out of a fleet of 59 at the Worlds in Phuket, and de Bruin is keen to see more locally-based Tasars to compete against.

After the Worlds in 2007, the fleet of four Phuket Tasars raced regularly at the Phuket Yacht Club in Ao Yon. The owners continue to learn more each time they race and with conditions usually 10-12 knots and 32C there is little to complain about even when capsized as the water is a welcoming 28C.

Since, de Bruin and friends have been actively seeking Phuket buyers and now they can confirm four more Tasars are currently being shipped from Australia. This will bring the local fleet to eight, all of which intend to enter the Phuket King's Cup Regatta which takes place 28 November - 5 December, 2009, off Kata Beach, Phuket.

According to de Bruin, there may be some available for charter.

'It's great to see more smaller boats and new classes adding to the already diverse fleet the Phuket King's Cup Regatta attracts each year,' commented Race Director, Simon James.

In a drive to support club sailing in Phuket and grow a competitive class of local two-handed dinghies with an eye to the future, de Bruin said 'We’d like to get a bit of growth happening here and, who knows, we might be able to field a more competitive group when we host the 2015 Worlds again in Phuket.'

The Tasars will race over the two day registration weekend of the Regatta - 28th to 29th November – with the prizes being awarded at the official opening ceremony on Sunday 29th November at Kata Beach Resort. The Tasar fleet will be joined by an Optimist fleet which will also compete on the opening weekend.
