Magic 25s are developing strongly in Canberra, with seven boats already in the fleet (including an impressive purchase during the winter) and at least one new syndicate forming. The Magic 25 Class Association of Australia has been formed to guide and strengthen this growth. At present the office bearers are all from Canberra, but they have a national perspective and are keen to re-grow the class in other parts of Australia.
The class has proved popular with young sailors, who like the thrills of a sports boat, the challenge of asymmetric spinnakers and the fun of a trapeze. It has proved popular with more mature sailors, who still want the thrills of a high performance boat with enough size to stretch out larger frames. The class is attracting families who want to sail together and has also attracted a number of capable women sailors. It is a favourite of students from the Canberra Yacht Club Sailing School and the Youth Racing Squad.
A sail clinic has already been organised by the Association with Ian Short and Glenn Cooper from Ian Short Sails, both on abd off the water. Further tuning and training clinics will be run throughout the season. A circuit of regattas has been arranged in different venues in the ACT, NSW and Victoria for the 2009/10 season. Details are available on the Class website at www.magic25.yachting.org.au, including the state and national championships.
The focus of the Association is to be a service to owners. To deal with the problem of there being no current record of boat owners, the Association is compiling a Class Register of current and past Magic 25 owners, so it can keep in touch with them and encourage them to use and enjoy their boats and make use of the wealth of knowledge among Magic crews. The Register will also assist the Association to promote the Class.
Owners are encouraged to contact the Association Secretary, John Graham, on john(at)grahams.com.au and have their boat and contact details included in the Class Register.
A strategy is also being implemented of contacting owners who may not be using their boats to encourage them to put them on the market and get them back on the water.
The 'Take the Cash and Smile all the way to the Bank' campaign is co-ordinated by Neil Primrose.
Any Owners who would like to put their underused boat onto the market through the Association’s website might contact Neil on t - 02 6295 0980; mob - 0412 015 125; or - neil(at)primrosesolutions.com.au
