Powerboat P1 World ChampionshipSNAV OSG and Seagull Chaudron were crowned Powerboat P1 World Champions for 2009 after Sunday’s sizzling season-finale at the Sicilian Grand Prix of the Sea in Siracusa.

The race for Evolution and SuperSport gold went tantalisingly down to the wire with both class champions having to wait until round ten’s checkered flag to finally toast victory.

Triumphant Evolution Class pilots Giancarlo Cangiano, Giovanni Carpitella and Hannes Bohinc have rarely been matched on the waters this season, winning exactly 50% of the races and claiming a podium finish in all but two in 2009.

Heading to Siracusa needing to overhaul Racing Silverline’s 75-point lead, Messrs Cangiano and Carpitella backed up Saturday’s Sprint victory with second place during Sunday’s Endurance Race to finish runners-up in the overall Grand Prix of the Sea and consequently pip the British team at 2009’s final hurdle.

Hoisting aloft his second Powerboat P1 World Championship trophy, OSG’s jubilant team owner Cangiano said: 'Every championship is a part of history but this is by far my best so far.

'This is the championship of technology, organisation, power and experience and for me it is my greatest achievement in powerboat racing.'

'We have a very good team, Hannes has won two world titles and it was fantastic sharing Giovanni’s first Powerboat P1 prize.

'Our aggressive mentality paid off. We beat everyone in every department this year and that is the secret to continued success.'

One half of this year’s silver medalists, Jan Falkowski complimented OSG for their efforts, agreeing that the best team won overall. 'We would’ve bitten your arm off if you had offered us second place at the start of the year.

'We haven’t had the fastest boat but it’s never nice to get so close and have it snatched away right at the last minute.'

Angelo Tedeschi cemented his place amongst the powerboat racing greats after scoring his third consecutive SuperSport Class World Championship title.
The Italian, who has been part of Powerboat P1 since the first-ever race in Italy seven years ago, attributed their season’s success to the team’s consistency and diligent preparation.

'Every year it gets better and better. The competition has been its hardest so in that respects it is definitely the most satisfactory.

'All season there has been a lot of nerves and tension between us and Baia Attolini and there has been some tough moments both on and off the water.

'We’ve led the championship since Malta so it is richly deserved for everyone involved.'

2009 addition Viktor Shemshuk, complete with his vibrant 100-strong Ukrainian entourage, said he was feeling 'on top of the world' after winning the SuperSport Class World Championship in only his first year in Powerboat P1.
'It is an amazing feeling. A lot of supporters came out here to watch the Seagull Chaudron win its first trophy and help party with us. It illustrates our ambition for bringing Powerboat P1 to the Ukraine and hopefully a race at home is sooner rather than later.'

The Ukrainian Spirit’s victory was also a feather in the cap for Ilmor Engines who, like Tedeschi, claimed their third successive championship.

The sun has set on Sicily and a landmark year for Powerboat P1, according to Cangiano. 'It has been a very good year for P1. It is the best boat show circuit in the world.'
