Putrajaya, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 - Breezy skies over a placid Putrajaya Lake set the scene for a spectacular close to the first ever Monsoon Sailing Clinic jointly promoted by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Malaysian Yachting Association.

Sailors eagerly took to the lake as match race competitors for the first time since completing the four day-clinic, which taught the finer techniques of strategy and tactics of match race sailing.
New found skills were pushed to their limits in the chase to be the number one team on the water, and for one talented individual loomed the promise of the “Most Promising Sailor” Award.

The head coach from the North U programme, Bill Gladstone decided that students would be judged by their all round on water skills.

“We're looking for the student who is most enthusiastic about sailing and best translates what they’ve learnt to use on the water,” said the American coach.

That prize went to Nurul Elia bt Anuar, the 18-year old KBU student who was one of two girls who made the list of top three students.

She skippered her team Sail Putrajaya to gold on home waters winning all of their match races.

Nurul Elia said she gained invaluable knowledge in sailing from the Monsoon Sailing School “The course was very detailed, teaching us everything from tactics to techniques to sailing in every kind of wind condition. I feel much more confident on the water I can’t wait to put my skills to use.”

Nurul hopes the opportunity comes for her to compete in Malaysian Championships where the winner gets a ticket into the Monsoon Cup.

All 33 participants of the Monsoon Sailing School received their certification in match race sailing from the President of Putrajaya Corporation Tan Sri Samsuddin Osman.

Tan Sri Samsudin said that he thought it was an excellent use of the Putrajaya Maritime Centre facilities,

“The lake and the centre was built for this kind of event. Clinics such as this will contribute to raising the standards of Malaysian competitive sailors to a higher standard,” he said.

The Monsoon Cup will be held 1-6 December in Pulau Duyong, Terengganu.
